The operator stacking that changed Old 41
The most useful thing to understand about downtown right now is that the same names keep reappearing. Brandon and Caitlin Schewe opened Canary Club as their third venture in downtown Bonita, pairing three-day-fermented sourdough with wood-fired mezze that chart their own course through Middle Eastern traditions, and the room earned a place in Gulfshore Life's 2026 Best New Restaurants writeup. A few doors from that orbit, The Bohemian, an eclectic bar and restaurant serving small plates, seafood and cocktails, was named the 2026 Gulfshore's Best Date Night Restaurant. And the team behind Sugar Shack is not done: owner Moran is building Telephone North and South, full-scale restaurants with indoor and outdoor dining, plus a live-music concept called HoneyHole Downtown, expected to open in early 2027 along Old 41.
Read those three sentences together and the pattern surfaces. This is not a wave of outside capital dropping franchises into a mall pad. It is three or four local operators compounding on top of what already works. A resident recognizing the same chef, the same GM, the same server across two different rooms is the entire point.
The context matters, because Gulfshore Life did not sugarcoat the year in its January feature. The industry is under pressure: rents and operating costs are sky high, and the summer months were exceptionally slow. That is exactly why the summer calendar downtown reads the way it does. The Downtown Showdown singing competition runs Tuesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., with voting through the Sugarshack Downtown app and contestants rotating each week. - Wednesdays at Hopsized Brewing. Wednesday Night Trivia runs from 7 p.m. onward at Hopsized Brewing Company, and it is the closest thing downtown has to a standing weekly ritual for people who live within a fifteen-minute drive.
- Wednesdays and Sundays at Rooftop at Riverside. The two-story bar overlooking Riverside Park runs community nights midweek and Sunday evenings, drawing on the first food truck park in Lee County, featuring eight food trucks, a kids' game area with a mist wall, and a two-story bar. In July, that mist wall is not decoration.
- Thursdays and Fridays at Vichino's. The wine bar programs a mix of tastings and live sets; a recent example was a free Sip & Sample: Juicy Whites at 11 a.m. and a Saturday music trivia night that same weekend.
- Sundays at Shangri-La Springs. A Sound Bath and Energy Healing at Shangri-La Springs Resort is on the July 26 calendar at 6:30 p.m., part of a rotation the resort has kept going through the offseason.
You can build a full week out of that list without repeating a venue and without driving past Bonita Beach Road once. That is new.
Weekend anchors: tribute nights, Broadway, and a parade
Weekends belong to two poles: The Stage at 9144 Bonita Beach Road SE, and Arts Bonita's Centers for the Arts complex. They serve different rooms, and both are running full summer schedules.

Arts Bonita is running the other kind of weekend. Frozen: The Broadway Musical is on stage at the Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs through mid-July, and the venue's regular concert schedule fills in the shoulder dates. It is the same complex that anchors the corridor's cultural programming most of the year, and it does not go dark for summer.
The other weekend fixture is not a ticket but a tradition. The 2026 Bonita Springs Independence Day Parade, hosted by the Bonita Springs Firefighters, kicked off at 9 a.m. from Rosemary Drive, traveled down Old 41, and ended at Kentucky Street. The parade route is worth memorizing because it is essentially a map of the downtown you should already know: everything worth walking to sits on or one block off that line. It is a water-friendly parade, though spectators are asked to skip the water balloons.
Between stops: the short walk nobody uses

- Start at Riverside Park with a drink at Rooftop at Riverside, using the food-truck lineup as the appetizer round.
- Cross to Sugarshack Downtown for the middle of the Downtown Showdown or a regular live set.
- Finish at Canary Club or The Bohemian depending on whether you want pizza and mezze or small plates and a cocktail.
- Grab a morning-after croissant at Wolfman Bakery, where Argentina-born Clara Fasciglione's shop specializes in French croissants filled or topped with items like dulce de leche or parmesan, plus sandwiches, quiches, soups, and salads. It is around the corner rather than across town.
That loop, done at a normal pace, is a Friday night. Done at a slower pace with a Wonder Gardens detour, it is a Saturday. Neither requires the car after the first ignition.
A note on Coconut Point, and why downtown is different
Coconut Point is not downtown, and treating them as the same neighborhood is the mistake most guides make. The mall complex has its own dining anchors and its own summer rhythm, and plenty of residents split their week between the two. What downtown offers that Coconut Point structurally cannot is operator continuity. When Moran opens HoneyHole in early 2027, it will be within walking distance of two other rooms he already runs. When the Schewes decide what to do next, it will land within the same handful of blocks. That is a different kind of neighborhood than a plaza tenant roster, and it is why the summer calendar has gotten dense enough to matter.

Downtown Bonita in summer 2026 is not the corridor it was three summers ago.
